How To Keep The Victim of Talents

As the world becomes more and more specialised, with less and less ‘Jack-Of-All-Trades’ around, it seems inevitable that stand out employees will come along. These are the people that are generally so good at what they do the very thought of replacing them is offensive. If you are a manager, you will no doubt know exactly who these people are and what strengths and weaknesses each of them have and despite the old cliché that everyone is replaceable, the reality is that you want to keep this employee around. So how do you go about it?

Now before jumping into some of the methods that can be followed to help keep a hold of these employees it is important to recognise that all employees are different and no hard and fast rule applies. A 60 Hour Week but Employees only Work 4 Days

Dear Editor,

I got my first job when I was 14 and basically haven’t stopped working, be it part time or full time since then. Many of the full time positions I have worked in have been flexible and I have only worked 4 days a week.

I now work for myself, often only working 4 days in a week but sometimes working 5. I worked 6 and 7 days a week to get it off the ground for over 12 months but I now enjoy my 4 days a week and thoroughly enjoy a Friday to Sunday weekend.

My partner and girlfriend for many years also works a 4 day week and her company has 2 employment options, 4 days a week working 9:30am until 8:00pm, or the standard Monday to Friday. She has of course opted for the 4 day a week option because this allows us to spend more time together and enjoy our weekend. We both accept that we see little of each other during the week however even saying that a 9:30 start time. That is a bit of a sleep in.

The type of format got me thinking… why don’t more businesses operate with different employment options? More and more people want to be in communication with businesses after the standard 5pm closing time so in this respect it makes sense.

The Pursuit of Simplicity in Business

The dream of almost every single employee within a company is for simplicity within the role, be it the removal of double handling, the layout of a workspace or the forms that need to be completed. Every business, even those at the top of the field, has opportunities for improvement.

Before commencing the pursuit of simplicity within your business it must be accepted that with improvement comes change. Evolution and change is one of the key elements to the world and universe and a business that does not feel it needs to change or evolve is doomed to die a slow and gradual death. Even companies at the absolute forefront of the industry or even the world are at the front because they are always looking for improvements and constantly evolving. Improvements in product quality and systems and processes will ultimately result in increased employee happiness due to the reduction of frustration and annoyance in the role.
